Dr Mari Alkatiri had his early training in surveying. During the twenty four years of the occupation of his country he studied and later taught Law at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, while representing the Timorese independence movement each year at the United Nations. He held the position of Prime Minister in Timor-Leste from 2002 to 2006 where his greatest achievement was securing a favourable deal from Australia in relation to oil and gas in the Timor Sea, and securing the country's financial future with the establishment of the Petroleum Fund. He is Secretary General of FRETILIN, the largest party in the Parliament of Timor-Leste, of which he is a founding member.
