The article below is an illustration of how Fernando Lasama just has no clue of the law and the fact that he is one to whom the constitution and the people look to above most to uphold the law of the land.
The Indonesian Criminal Code which is the applicable law in Timor-Leste clearly provides for the offences of being an accessory or an accomplice. Reinado is a fugitive from the law, for which there is an arrest warrant. He is a prison escapee. There are a number of offences one can commit providing knowingly providing him with food, shelter, and other comforts of life which assist him maintain his unlawful evasion of the law.
I don't believe Mr. Lasama does not understand the law so clearly. It is very sad if that is the case and he as a head of this state has not bothered to ascertain precisely what the law is before inciting people to break the law.
This is the same person who two weeks ago in a meeting with donors assisting in capacity building with the national parliament said that he was concerned with the court handing down decisions "that were creating instability in the country" referring to the warrant for Reinado's arrest.
Whatever Mr. Lasama's state of mind, he has incited people to break the law. Whatever his state of mind he has in fact done so to protect and defend people who have been providing such assistance to Reinado, and ensuring that Reinado continues to receive support by providing "clarification" for those who might have felt threatened by the Prime Minister and President's threats that those who had provided assistance to reinado would be arrested. It is commonly known that PD and its supporters have been doing this for some time, and Mr. Lasama's name has been linked more than once to such efforts.
Mr. Lasama is not fit to be a President of the People's House of Timor-Leste. But then again that was clearly the peoples' opinion too. I mean, his party, PD, holds 8 from 65 seats and yet he is the President of the National Parliament. How he got this with threats and bargaining and cajoling was an exercise in cynicism, because now we are starting to see his true colours. He is a man who protects criminals and does not care about the law or the constitution.
He should be held responsible for the fiasco of the President's Anti Poverty Task Force and will be held responsible for breaking the parliament's own law with respect to the deliberations for the discussion and approval of the budget. Whatever the quality of his advisors, he is the responsible one and he should accept the final responsibility.
In any other country, there would have been howls for his resignation, but alas this is Timor-Leste.......the Non-Democratic Republic of the Bananas.
Lasama: Providing Food to Major Alfredo is Alright

The President of the National Parliament Fernando “Lasama” Araujo has said that there is no problem in some people providing help such as some civilian clothing or foodstuffs like rice to former military police commander Major Alfredo Reinado Alves. Because according to Lasama this type of help is like humanitarian assistance.
But according to Lasama giving support such as providing military uniforms is a problem. For this reason the President of the National Parliament agreed with the statement of the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao when he said that the government would arrest those persons who provided military uniforms to Major Alfredo during recent times.
“These uniforms which have emerged as a concern for Prime Minister Xanana does not apply to those people who provide a pair of jeans to Major Alfredo , because giving rice or a pair of jeans is like humanitarian work and there are no problems with this,” pointed out Lasama to journalists yesterday.
As well as this, the President of the National Parliament also gave some thoughts on how to quickly resolve the problem of Alfredo through dialog. According to him in order for a solution to be found for Major Alfredo Reinado and his group, the government and Major Alfredo have to each bring themselves down.
He said the government and Major Alfredo should not keep raising the tension any higher because the process will then not move forward and the problem will not be able of being resolved.
“This State firmly believes that the problem of Major Alfredo has to be solved through dialog, this is the principle that the leadership of this State is holding onto tightly,” said the President of the National Parliament Fernando Lasama de Araujo to journalists yesterday at the National Parliament.
Lasama asked all parties to give their support to how dialog can proceed smoothly and find an in depth solution to this problem. He said “each person has the right to comment, but, they have to provide an alternative to the problem that exists.”
He added that, the process with respect to the 2006 case is currently moving forward, some have already faced justice, but Lasama explained that whenever we speak about justice it does not mean that those who have already faced the court have been found to be at fault already, but, that the court will find consensus to justify that which is wrong or right.
“Perhaps when Major Alfredo also faces the court he can tell there what is right and where there is wrong and put forward his arguments so that in that way a solution can be sought for his own problem,” underscored the President of the National Parliament.
